Circuit des Yeux – Decoy
Haley Fohr returns with “Halo on the Inside: Director’s Cut”, restoring her 2025 album to its original vision. Released digitally via Matador Records, this expanded edition features three previously unreleased tracks and two demos, adding to the original sequence.
“Decoy”, one of the previously unreleased songs, arrives as a stark piano ballad. It’s minimal but effective, stripping back the elaborate arrangements found elsewhere on the record. Fohr’s voice carries the weight here, supported by spare piano work that doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Fohr wrote the album during a period of isolation, wrestling with thoughts of enemies and villains. Her director’s note talks about breaking down those archetypes to find “a wonderless child” at the centre. It’s heavy stuff, but the songs don’t lecture. Instead, they work through ideas about love, pain, and human connection without forcing conclusions.
The Director’s Cut resequences the original album and adds five previously unreleased recordings. Two demos of “Cosmic Joke” and “Truth” show the songs in a rawer form. The three new tracks, including “Decoy”, fill out the album’s scope without bloating it.
Fohr collaborated with people she’d never met to finish the record, calling them “benevolent strangers”. That openness is evident in the music, which refuses to remain locked into one mood or sound. “Halo on the Inside” was already ambitious. This version underscores that ambition by letting the album breathe more fully.
Fohr hits the road this fall with dates across North America and Europe. On October 30th in Los Angeles, she’ll perform a live score to the 1922 silent film “Nosferatu” at the Philosophical Research Society, an unusual but fitting project for an artist who doesn’t take predictable paths.
